Terms of Service

Last updated: August 2026.

These terms cover your use of Instagram DM Inbox ("the service"). By connecting an Instagram account to the service, you accept them. If you do not, do not connect an account.

What the service is

Instagram DM Inbox mirrors the incoming Instagram direct messages of an Instagram professional account into that account owner's own Obsidian vault, on their own device. It has two parts. The Obsidian plugin is open source and free, and runs entirely on your device. The server is a hosted component that holds your Instagram access token, receives Instagram's message webhook, and queues each message until your plugin has written it into your vault.

Your vault is where your data lives. The server is a relay, not a store.

Not affiliated with Meta or Obsidian

The service is independent. It is not endorsed by, sponsored by, or affiliated with Meta Platforms, Instagram, or Obsidian. Instagram is a trademark of Meta Platforms, Inc. Obsidian is a trademark of Dynalist Inc. Your use of Instagram remains governed by Instagram's own terms, and your use of Obsidian by Obsidian's.

Your account and your responsibility

The service cannot send, edit, or delete an Instagram message, and never asks for your Instagram password. So this section is about what you do with the messages after they reach your vault, not about anything the service does on your behalf.

Availability

The service is provided as-is, with no warranty of any kind and no uptime guarantee. It depends on Instagram's API, which Meta can change, restrict, or withdraw at any time, and has. If that happens, part or all of the service may stop working with no notice, through no fault of either of us.

We may change, suspend, or discontinue the hosted server. If we discontinue it, we will give notice in advance where we reasonably can, and the plugin will remain open source so it can be pointed at a server you run yourself.

Limits on liability

To the greatest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for lost profits, lost business, or lost opportunities, arising from your use of the service.

Concretely, and so this is not just boilerplate: the service can miss things. Instagram may not deliver a webhook. A message may arrive late, or not at all. A conversation's funnel stage may fail to sync between your vault and the server. A note may not be written if your device is offline or your vault is unavailable. Treat your vault as the system of record, keep your own backups of it, and do not rely on the service as the only copy of anything that matters to you.

Fees

There is no charge today. If a paid tier is introduced later, we will give existing users notice before any charge applies, and nothing will start charging you automatically. The plugin itself is open source and stays free.

Ending it

You can disconnect at any time by removing the app from Instagram, under Settings, then Apps and websites. Removing it revokes the access token immediately. See the privacy policy for exactly what that deletes and how to have the rest removed.

We may suspend or end a connection that abuses Instagram's API, that puts the service or other users at risk, or that we are required to stop. Where we do, we will tell you why.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change materially, the "last updated" date above changes with them. This page is the current version and the record of it.

Your data

What the service collects, why, how long it is kept, and how to have it deleted are all set out in the privacy policy, which forms part of these terms.
